Roddy Bolduc #79 Super Late Model

Posted by Tom on June 25, 2015

RoddyBolduc200.jpgRoddy Bolduc is a veteran driver at Laird but we haven’t seen him on the track for a few years.  Roddy said, “The last time I raced was 2011.”  He was seen in the pits last season though, helping his daughter Sarah Babic who raced the first part of the season in a Factory Four.

Roddy has two previous track championships under his belt.  One in the Outlaw Modified Division, and one in the Super Late Model Division.

In our Season Opener on June 11th, Roddy didn’t have much luck.  During the heat he got loose coming out of corner 4, and lost control while travelling further up the track, making a run into the infield and through a lot of water up to corner 1.

Racenight Recap - Thursday June 11th

Posted by Tom on June 16, 2015

The racenight of Thursday June 11 represented our first racenight of the season after a couple of prior cancellations.  We had a good driver turnout in all divisions but a relatively small crowd on hand for our first night.  The skies were overcast with rain passing through a few miles south but no rain was felt at the track.

A moment of silence was held during the opening ceremonies for Chris Jones.  Chris raced in the Factory Stock division and was well liked by other drivers and teams in the pits.  Chris passed away in a work related highway accident on the morning of Saturday June  6th.

With the absence of our regular announcer, George Pinder, to sing the national anthems, announcer Spanky Robinson found someone in the stands to fill in.  Jody Rioux sang the anthem.  Jody recently moved to the Sault from Lethbridge Alberta.

We had excellent races through the night.  The green track with no rubber down, coupled with the colder temperatures proved to make for a tricky situation for many drivers.  We saw lots of spins and slides through the night.

The 2015 season marks Laird International Raceway’s 17th year in operation.  Drivers and teams have been busy over the past few months preparing their cars for some great competition over the summer.  We are pleased you could join us for our opening night.

We have 17 race nights scheduled for this season, but at the time of writing this article, we had already cancelled one night due to cold temperatures and windy conditions.  In years past we have had similar problems getting the season started, but usually it is a water/drainage issue due to spring rains.  We have had a relatively dry spring this year, and that coupled with some new drainage pipes that were installed under the track to drain the infield, we are hoping to get started a bit earlier.

We have a series of special events planned for intermissions or at the end of the race evening this year.  These include School Bus Races, Spin-To-Win Derbies, Spectator Drags, and a Kid’s Power Wheels race.  We also have some “Theme” nights, including a  “Super Hero & Princess Night”, a “Christmas in June”, a “Halloween in August”, and other nights.

Dan Byrnes #46 Super Late Model

Posted by Tom on June 11, 2015

TianaKudlac200x250.jpgThe Laird Modified division will see a rookie driver this season.  Tiana Kudlac, fiancé of Dan Byrnes, will be  driving the #46 Modified.  Last season the car was run by Dan’s twin brother Dylan but due to work commitments Dylan won’t be running it this year.  That left the seat open and after discussing it the couple decided that maybe Tiana can give it a whirl.

Tiana has never raced a car before.  She said, “I’ve raced horses, but never a car.  I’ve driven a standard before, so that might help me get started.”

DanByrnes200x250.jpgDan has driven the Modified for a few years and last year moved into the Super Late Model division.  The veteran driver should be able to help Tiana get oriented in the car fairly quickly.  Tiana got into the car for the first time during our first test and tune session on May 14th. She was obviously a bit nervous.  Her first outing was a bit slow and cautious.  When she came back into the pits Dan asked her,  “How many times did you use the brake?”, to which Tiana replied, “I didn’t use it”.  Dan then said, “Then you are not going fast enough.”
